Grant Park

Locally known as “Chicago’s Front Yard,” Grant Park is a public park located in the Loop Community area. In a city as massive and industrial as The Windy City, the park is a great escape to relax and enjoy time out in nature. This recreational space is named after the United States President and Civil War General Ulysses S. Grant, and its cultural beauty goes beyond its namesake.

Similar to New York’s Central Park, this park has been the location of numerous historic events that shaped Chicago into what it is today. From massive celebrations after a Bulls victory to Election Day victory speeches, Grant Park has seen it all. If you’re looking for a peek into the history of the city, this is the place to start.

Grant Park Landmarks

This park is accessible to everyone and packed full of fun activities and Chicago landmarks. Whether you want to enjoy a nice walk in the park or tour iconic tourist attractions, there’s a little something for everybody. Some of the most popular landmarks in Grant Park include:

  • Buckingham Fountain: In the center of the park is the Buckingham Fountain, which is one of the largest fountains in the world. It runs from May through October and has dazzling water displays every 20 minutes. Rest your feet, enjoy the show for a bit, and cool off in the fountain’s mist after a long day of walking around the city.
  • The Bean: You can’t talk about Grant Park without bringing up The Bean. This iconic sculpture is a popular photo spot for Chicago residents and visitors alike, with people smiling for the camera in the sculpture’s reflective metal. Take a selfie to share with your friends and family, knowing you’ve visited an iconic spot in The Windy City.
  • Maggie Daley Park: This lakefront recreational center has activities for everybody. From ice skating to a climbing wall, you’re sure to find something that piques your interest. The Skating Ribbon allows visitors to skate a stunning loop with the skyline as the backdrop. In the summer, this ribbon is converted into a roller-skating experience that gives you the same exhilarating experience.
  • Art Institute of Chicago: Located on the west side of Grant Park, the Art Institute of Chicago is one of the best art schools in the United States. With an extensive collection of American art, this art museum and school has been helping artists flourish since 1893. Walk through the art gallery to see iconic art from across the country and the next generation of artists.
  • Chicago Lakefront Trail: If you love hikes and being out in nature, the Lakefront Trail has 18 miles of trails to get your daily steps in. You get to enjoy a view of Lake Michigan as you jog or ride your bike.
  • Museum Campus: Chicago’s Museum Campus is home to the city’s top 3 natural science museums: Field Museum of Natural History, Adler Planetarium, and Shedd Aquarium. This 57-acre campus makes learning fun and memorable for everyone who visits.

History of Grant Park

Back in 1835, Chicago residents lobbied to keep this lakefront property open and free of any developments. Since then, the area has been deemed public ground, never to be built on. As time went on, the original land absorbed nearby parks and continued to grow to its current expansive size. Grant Park now consists of multiple parks inside of parks, allowing for a variety of activities and free space to stretch your legs.
